Travel essentials

In a few weeks our family is taking a family vacation and we’re all so excited. It’s been a while since we’ve really traveled anywhere and I miss it so. Being pregnant close together and our daughter starting Kindergarten has really restricted our travel plans, but now that the little ones are getting bigger and spring break is coming up, it’s time for a family trip. It’s never too early to prepare for a trip when you’re traveling with little ones and I’ve already started thinking of ways I’ll keep the little ones entertained while we’re on the plane. Our rambunctious 2 year old does not like to sit still, so making sure I have enough to keep him busy is really important and the baby is happy with one of her teething toys.

Travel Must Haves

There are 3 things I ALWAYS make sure that are in our diaper bag when I  travel with the kids and that’s snacks, something for them to do, and diapers. Packing the diaper bag is one of the key components to travel since it has everything we’ll need until we get to the hotel and have our luggage. Chargers, Snacks, Diapers, Wipes, Things to keep them happy and busy, and blankets are always in my bag with snacks, diapers, and entertainment being the most important items. Since we still have 2 small ones in diapers I always make sure to stock up before any trip and pack lots of quality diapers and wipes in the diaper bag, like Huggies®. Huggies® Little Snugglers have been our go to diaper with the baby because of their great quality, durability, and the sheer fact that they do the best job at keeping my little ones dry with no leaks, which is especially important while traveling. No one wants to deal with diaper leaks while in an airport, road trip, or on a plane.

Huggies Diapers

Huggies at Walmart

I stock up on my Huggies diapers and Huggies® Natural Care Wipes on my usual trips to Walmart because of their great value. When I’m there I also snack up on snacks for the kids like crackers, fruit pouches, and granola bars along with various other odds and ends we’ll need for our trip. Since our 2 year old doesn’t stay entertained for too long with the same thing I like to make sure we have a variety of things for him to do. He can switch between watching a movie, coloring, playing with his cars, or reading/playing with a quiet book. I decided to make him his own quiet book for our upcoming trip and it was pretty simple to do and will provide a variety of things to help keep him entertained on our trip. When he is done playing with the Quiet Book the baby even likes to look at the pages, since she is really starting to grab and play with things now. (I don’t let her play with the pages that have pieces, like the game and puzzle). You can also check out my Pinterest page for more Quiet Book ideas, I have a whole board dedicated to quiet book pages!

What you’ll need:

  • Hot glue gun
  • Felt Pages
  • Fabric marker
  • Metal rings
  • Sharp scissors
  • Ribbon
  • Felt Letters (optional)

Quiet Book for Travel

Here’s what you’ll do:

I made a few pages I knew would keep our little guy busy and the great thing is that you can totally customize the book to meet your little ones needs. I hate cutting out letters so I bought the already cut felt letters, but if you have more patience then me you can write them out and cut them on your own. For the book I used 9×12 felt pages and cut them in half to make 2 pages. I cut a small hole in the top right corner of each page for the ring to go through.

Quiet Book Tutorial

Quiet Book Ring

For our first page I did tic tac toe. I cut out x’s and o’s out of felt and made 5 pieces of each one. On the page I used ribbon to make the boxes and hot glued the ribbon down to the felt background. I added tic tac toe to the page and on the back I cut out a square piece of felt and hot glue it on three sides, leaving the top side open. You can use this to store your tic tac toe pieces so they don’t get lost.

For our next page I did a worm puzzle. I printed out the pattern I found online and cut everything out. With my fabric marker I traced all the pieces onto different color felt and cut them out. I also traced out a piece in the shape of the whole puzzle to use as a guide. If you want a way to make the puzzle more secure you can add snaps or velcro to each piece, but I decided to not do those.

Next we have a shapes page. I cut out a few shapes in different colors and hot glued them down. Very simple and easy.

Last up I did colors. Like the shapes page I just cut out a few pieces of different colors and hot glued them down. No pattern needed. Just cut out some blobs and glue.

Quiet Book Colors

While on the plane we can pretend to play tic tac toe. Since he’s 2, he has no idea what he’s doing, but he loves to play anyway. We can practice shapes and colors and work on building a puzzle. Everything was very easy to make and assemble and you can keep adding to the quiet book as you see fit. I’m thinking a few more pages in our book with laces, buckles, snaps, and a race track will help to keep our little guy entertained during our flight.
