I can’t believe my little girl turned 4 today and to celebrate I made her a cake made out of her FAVORITE candy, M&M’s. Whenever we go to the store she is asking for a pack of M&M’s and after seeing a few M&M covered cakes on pinterest I knew what I was doing for her birthday. This cake was fairly easy to make and was a huge hit with our daughter. To start out I prepared a boxed cake mix per the package directions and baked it like a sheet cake. Once it was cooled I removed it from the pan and carved a 4 out of it. I used a #4 stencil to help me out, if you don’t need a #4 this website has all the numbers!
I then applied a crumb coat (thin layer of frosting) of frosting to the cake and I think this was the hardest part since the cake had been carved and pieces were crumbling off. I then placed it in the fridge for a couple hours. I then applied a thicker layer of frosting and then applied the M&M’s in color coordinated rows. I was able to get bags of M&M’s at target on clearance (thank you Easter candy clearance) and I picked up the spring colored ones. I needed 2 bags to make my number 4, but only because there were less blue and green M&M’s in the bag. To play it safe I would pick up 2-3 bags and you can always eat the extra ones! Make sure to put the plain sides of the M&M’s up, you can see some of the M’s are up in my cake and that’s because a certain birthday girl decided she wasn’t ready for bed and found me working on her cake and insisted on helping. It also explains why some of my rows have different colors at the ends. Once you’re all finished I would put it in the fridge so that it sets and the frosting doesn’t melt and M&M’s start sliding off. One of the great things about working with M&M’s is they don’t melt and the color doesn’t bleed or fade like some other candies!
