Oreo Cake Truffles are Oreos stuffed with cake and dipped into chocolate, similar to an Oreo Cake Ball or Oreo Truffle. These dipped Oreos are decadent, delicious, and perfect for any occasion with different sprinkles.
Do you love Oreos? Me too! Here is a new and delicious way to enjoy Oreo truffles with Oreo Cake Truffles. They’re Oreos stuffed with cake and dipped into chocolate. The best part is you can switch up the cake flavor you use and sprinkles depending on the occasion.
Oreo Cake Truffles
These Oreo cake truffles remind me of chocolate birthday cake or birthday cake Oreo balls. This recipe does make a lot of Oreo truffles, but they’re great for parties, bake sales, and as gifts. Now let’s stuff some Oreos with cake!
Ingredients
1 box chocolate cake mix (15.25 oz) plus ingredients called for on the package – such as eggs, water, and oil.
60 Oreos
2 cups (240 grams) confectioners’ sugar
1/3 cup (76 grams) unsalted butter, slightly softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
32 ounces semi-sweet Baker’s Chocolate* (no chocolate chips, candy melts can work)
¼ cup sprinkles
How to Make Oreo Cake Truffles
Prepare boxed cake mix according to the directions on the box. Let cool completely before mixing with frosting.
Remove white fillings from all Oreos and place fillings into a large bowl. Place chocolate cookies into a separate large bowl.
In the large bowl that has the white fillings, add in the confectioners’ sugar, butter, and vanilla extract. Beat on high until light and fluffy (about 5 minutes).
In a separate large bowl, crumble the cooled chocolate cake. It should be in fine crumbs.
Stir the frosting into the crumbled cake. Stir well so the frosting is evenly distributed throughout the crumbled cake. This is now your cake truffle filling.
Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
Take about 1 tablespoon of the cake truffle mixture and place it on the inside of one Oreo cookie. Take another Oreo cookie and place it on top. Use your hands to shape the cake truffle filling so it doesn’t overflow out of the cookie sandwich. Place the stuffed cookie on the parchment paper lined baking sheet and repeat the steps with the rest of the cake truffle mixture and cookies.
Once all cookies are stuffed, place the baking sheet of cookies into the freezer for about 15 minutes. Chilling the cookies first helps the chocolate harden faster on the cookies.
In a medium microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate for 2 minutes. Remove from the microwave after 2 minutes and stir well. If the chocolate isn’t completely melted, continue to heat in 30-second intervals stirring after each 30 seconds.
Line a second large baking sheet with parchment paper.
Take 5 cookies out of the freezer and dip cookies, one at a time, into chocolate using a fork. Lightly tap the fork on the side of the bowl to shake off excess chocolate then place the dipped cookie onto the second parchment-lined baking sheet. Add sprinkles to the top while the chocolate is still wet. Only take 5 cookies out of the freezer at a time so the others stay cold until you are ready to dip them in chocolate.
Once all cookies are dipped in chocolate, place cookies in the freezer for 15 minutes or in the fridge for 30 minutes so the chocolate has a chance to harden.
Cookies are best stored in the fridge (in a sealed food-safe container) so the chocolate doesn’t melt on your hands as you eat them. They can be stored in the fridge for up to a week. They can also be frozen for up to two months if sealed properly in a food-safe container.
Can I use chocolate chips for melting instead of Baker’s chocolate for Oreo Truffles?
No. Chocolate chips are designed to hold their shape when baked in cookies and have a coating on them that Baker’s chocolate doesn’t have. Chocolate chips don’t melt as smoothly as Baker’s chocolate does.
Why does the cake truffle stuffed Oreos look wet when I take them out of the fridge or freezer?
This is basically condensation on the chocolate. It won’t alter the taste of the chocolate. To prevent excess moisture on the cookies, store them well in a sealed food-safe container.
