Nutella Peppermint Muddy Buddies

Sharing is caring!

Nutella Peppermint Muddy Buddies (aka puppy chow) is an easy-to-make holiday treat. Chex, Nutella, and Candy Cane Hershey Kisses combine into a delicious chocolatey and peppermint holiday dessert.

Nutella Peppermint Muddy Buddies taste like Girl Scout Thin Mints. If you’re a huge fan of thin mints you will love this muddy buddy recipe!

Christmas Muddy Buddies make a great at-home snack during movie night, a delicious treat for holiday parties, and an even better gift for friends, family, and neighbors. Add some muddy buddies to a mason jar or Christmas tin, add a cute gift tag, and those you love will have a delicious homemade treat to enjoy for the holidays.

Traditionally muddy buddies are made with peanut butter, but we swapped that our for nutella. You can use whatever Chex cereal you like for muddy buddies, but I like to do a combo of chocolate and rice.

How to Make Peppermint Nutella Muddy Buddies

Here is how you are going to make your Christmas Nutella Muddy Buddies and everything you’ll need!

Ingredients:

  • 9 cups Rice Chex™, Corn Chex™ or Chocolate Chex™ cereal (or combination) (9 cups is a 12 oz box.)
  • 1 cup candy cane Hershey Kisses
  • 1/2 cup Nutella
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (I used 2 cups, but you can start at 1 1/2 and add more if needed)
  • Giant Ziploc Bag or Xtra Large Bowl – I like to use the 2-gallon Ziploc bags for this

How to Make Peppermint Nutella Puppy Chow

In a large bowl, measure cereal and set aside.

In a 1-quart microwavable bowl, microwave Hershey Kisses and butter uncovered on High in 20-second intervals; stir. After about the second time add in the Nutella.* Microwave about 20 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in vanilla.

Pour mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Pour into 2-gallon resealable food-storage plastic bag.

Add the powdered sugar. Seal the bag; shake until well coated. Spread on waxed or parchment paper to cool.

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Sprinkle with chopped-up candy canes or peppermint candies (optional) for added decoration.

*I first made this at an event with Chex and we added the Nutella at the beginning and the mixture microwaved weirdly and turned the mixture into a fudge consistency. When we made a second batch we waited to add in the Nutella and it came out a lot smoother.

These look so good! I have a nephew who is allergic to nuts, so I might try this with that new Hershey Chocolate Spread instead of Nutella.

I like the salty versions best. Trying to keep down my sugar intake.
