I had forgotten how messy babies are, but our newest little one has quickly reminded me. From spit up, to boogers, to eye crust, milk dribbles, and spit I feel like I’m always wiping something off him. The burp cloths are the store are not only expensive, but the designs are lacking and quality questionable. I knew I could make some of my own for a lot cheaper. With sales on fabric combined with coupons you can get cute fabric patterns for fairly cheap.
I ended up making 2 different sizes of burp cloths – 9 1/2″ W x 17″ L (pictured) and 12″ W x 18″ L. I like having the different sizes on hand for big or small messes and these were so easy to make that I’ll be throwing together a bunch of them. For the front I used a fun cotton print and the back I used a soft N fluffy fleece. Fleece, Chenille, and Minky are great to use for the back layer since they’re soft and absorbant.
- Cut your square. Whatever size. Mine were technically rectangles…9×14.
- Place the front of the chenille and front of the patterned material together and pin {so it looks inside out}.
- Sew all the way around all four sides, leaving appx 2 inches un-sewn.
- Use the 2″ hole to flip your fabric right sides out. Use a pencil or something long to help poke out the corners.
- Tuck the rough edges of the hole under and hand stitch the hole closed. If you don’t want to hand stitch the top closed you can top stitch a little less than 1/4″ around the burp rag making sure the opening is tucked in to be flush with the rest of the burp rag.

These are so cute and such a good idea! I like to make up gift baskets for new babies, and I often have fabric scraps, now I know what I can do with them that they will get used for sure!
