Walmart To Go: Making Grocery Shopping with Kids a Breeze! #WalmartToGo

As a participant in the Walmart to Go First program, I’ve received a personal invite and incentives for my time and efforts in creating this post.

When we moved to Colorado I was a little bummed to find out there were no grocery delivery services. In CA we had a few options available with one of them being a major grocery chain. I figured with the snow and super cold winters it would be a great option for people who didn’t want to make the trip out, especially mamas with kids. Fast forward a few years and I got invited to try out Walmart’s new To Go service. When I got the email I instantly became excited!

Having a 3 month old and 3 year makes grocery shopping interesting. I now try to plan my shopping around hubby’s work schedule, but that can be inconsistent and I find myself going to the store several times a week for miscellaneous items and rushing to go to the store before he leaves for work so I don’t have to drag the kids along. If you have little ones then you know how much of a chore it is to get the kids ready and out the door. The 3 year old needs to get dressed and have her hair done, the baby needs to be fed, diaper changed, and dressed and I somehow need to squeeze in a shower and toss on some clothes. Then there’s getting to the store. The baby is still little so he stays in his car seat which takes up the whole shopping cart basket, so I’m left with little room to place groceries. Can you see where I’m going with this? It’s a hot mess in the making…

Denver just happens to be a test market for the new Walmart To Go service and I was eager to try it out. I quickly setup my online profile and started shopping. The website was easy to use and there are LOTS of items to choose from. One of the things I really like is I can browse recipes online and switch back and forth between recipes and the To Go site, adding the items I need to my cart. Long gone are the days of wondering the aisles trying to find my items, making a list, or printing out the recipes and taking them to the store with me. I can do it from the comfort of my own home and I’m less likely to forget items like I do when I’m rushing through the store. I also don’t have to worry about the baby taking up the whole shopping cart or having to lug all the groceries into the house. This is a winning combination in my eyes.

So I did my shopping online and they had almost everything I wanted. I setup my delivery for the next day, but you can also do in store pickup for free if that makes you happier. Delivery charges range from $5-7, which is a decent price. For the delivery you pick a 2 hour time frame that they will come in. I picked mine for late afternoon and was eagerly awaiting my delivery. About 10 minutes before my time frame was going to be up I get a call from the delivery driver saying he’s running late and he’ll be there in about 30 minutes. I was a little disappointed, but I know that things happen. PLUS it just happened to be snowing that day. He finally showed up 45 minutes after my delivery time and I wasn’t very happy. For my first delivery I was highly annoyed. The driver was super nice and apologetic and after talking with him I felt bad for being angry that he was late.

When you place your order there is an option to allow them to substitute items in your cart. Say you ask for a specific brand of water and it’s not available they’ll sub it for another brand around the same price. There were a few items this happened with in my order, but they replaced them with like items and good brands so it wasn’t a big deal. I had already scheduled a second delivery for the next day and I was eager to see how that would go since my first one was late. Once again I got a call about 10 minutes before my delivery time frame was up saying he would be there in about 20 minutes. This time he showed up 20 minutes late and explained he got stuck in horrible traffic. I understand how that goes and told him not to worry about it.

I think my delayed delivery times has a lot to due with the fact that I’m 40ish minutes away from their warehouse and they were coming during rush hour traffic times. My area didn’t have morning delivery times and I wish they did. Mornings work a lot better for me AND I know they wouldn’t be hitting any traffic during that time. I talked with other bloggers and they all had great experiences. So far I think the service is great. The selection of items is high, quality good, my orders were correct, and delivery drivers friendly and apologetic. I think if they could adjust the delivery times in my area it would be perfect. Regardless of my deliveries being late I would use the service again. I love the convenience of shopping online and not having to drag the kids to the store, the delivery prices are reasonable, and did I mention I don’t have to take the kids to the store?
