Make kids clothes last longer

As a mom of 4 I’m all about saving money and making things last. With 4 kids to clothe I like to make sure I get the most bang for my buck while shopping, but I also like to make sure my kids clothes last so that I’m not out buying clothes every few weeks. I’ve found several ways to do that over the years and today I’m sharing my tips with you!

1. Battle stains early on – My kids are notorious for staining their clothes, especially my 1 year old. Having a good stain remover on hand is essential to our laundry routine and treating it as soon as possible helps to ensure that stains get out before they set in. Also make sure the stain is gone before putting the clothing piece in the dryer, since the dryer makes it harder to remove a stain.

2. Layers – Summer pieces can easily transition into fall and winter pieces with cardigans, leggings, and long sleeve t-shirts. For our daughter I turn warm weather dresses and skirts into cold friendly by layering her dresses with a pair of leggings or tights and a cardigan. For the boys I add a long sleeve shirt under their short sleeve one. Not only do the pieces last through more than 1-2 seasons, but the added layers give added warmth.

3. Buy a size up – When I go shopping I buy the kids clothes in a size up. This gives them more time in the items and if anything is a little too big you can always cuff it.

4. Wash with a quality detergent – Good detergent, like Method’s 4x laundry detergent, is another essential item to our laundry routine. A good detergent like Method’s naturally derived cleaning power is proven to remove tough dirt + stains and keeps colors bright and whites white. Plus, you can use it as a pretreat for stains. This is a good thing in helping to get the most out of your kids clothes since you’ll want clean stain free and unfaded items.

Other reasons why Method is so great:

  • There’s a fragrance for everyone (fruity (ginger mango), floral (spring garden), herbaceous-woody (beach sage and fresh clover), and free + clear (no fragrance).
  • Included an easy-to-use grip on the bottle instead of a handle because handles on bottles make them not fully recyclable
  • Bottles made with 100% post-consumer recycled materials + is fully recyclable
  • Works great in cold water so you use less energy for every load
  • Biodegradable and hypoallergenic formula

5. Footie Free for Babies – I always buy baby pj’s in footie free. They last a lot longer because my kids can wear them longer. With footie free I don’t have to worry about their feet getting too big and if the length gets a little too short I can just put on a pair of long socks so make up for the shortness.

6. Wash inside out – Items like Jeans, Graphic T’s, and anything with embellishments and glitter get washed inside out because it helps to keep them from fading, getting damaged, or washing off.

7. Sort clothes and Wash per directions – Follow the directions when washing clothes to make sure you are washing properly since the designer knows the best way to make the item stay new and sort clothes by color. There is nothing worse then washing a white shirt with a colored item that bleeds and having a ruined shirt, or a new pair of jeans with a t-shirt and having blue streaks all over it. I generally do a load of jeans, whites, light colors, and dark colors and wash everything but the whites on cold.
