DIY Christmas Card Garland

The holidays are all about traditions. Whether they’re traditions I had with my family growing up or new ones I am making with my growing family. Some of those traditions include driving around on Christmas eve and looking at Christmas lights while eating McDonalds. That started when I was a kid. My moms van broke down in a McDonalds parking lot. We had just finished looking at lights and while we waited for someone to come get us we had McDonalds for dinner and then it just became a thing, as a joke. Another tradition I vividly remember is going with my Mom and Aunt every year to the Hallmark store on the day after Christmas to get the list of ornaments that they wanted. They both collected a bunch of the different ones and would always go to get them at a discount. The biggest one I remember them collecting was the Barbie ornaments. They’ve stopped doing it now, but I have so many memories of getting up early and waiting outside the store with them that Hallmark is Christmas to me.

Hallmark Christmas Ornaments

Because of my fondness for going to the Hallmark store with my Mom and Aunt, Hallmark is my go to brand for Christmas items like cards, ornaments, and wrapping paper and what’s great about Hallmark is that they’re available at Walmart. I’m not big on collecting ornaments like they were, but my kids love the character ones so I like letting them pick out a new one each year and since we have a new little one in our family this year I’ll need to pick up her First Christmas ornament. The First Christmas Ornament is something I make sure to do with all my kids and I love that I can conveniently pick one up during one of my many Walmart trips. If you didn’t know by now, Walmart is my one stop shop for all things and being able to pick up my trusted brand of cards and ornaments while grocery shopping is a mom win for me. The less stores I have to go to with 3 kids, the better.

While shopping at Walmart and browsing their big selection of Holiday cards I saw they had some $2 off coupons for Hallmark hanging by the cards. Buy 3 cards, get $2 off. (Pssst, if you buy the $.97 cards it’s like you’re only paying for 1 card). I found those over in the greeting cards section of Walmart and I found my ornaments near all the Christmas stuff. Once we get our yearly picture of the kids done I’ll be sending out Christmas cards and this year instead of sending the same card to every person I am thinking I’ll hand pick a card for each person on my list. Since we don’t have a ton of people to send Christmas cards to, this will be so much more unique to them and I’ll be sharing the Hallmark cheer with their lovely holiday cards.

We also receive a bunch of cards and they usually get put somewhere and forgotten or the kids steal them, but this year I figured it would be nice to display them somewhere that everyone can enjoy looking at them, like on a Christmas Card Garland. Making one is super easy, affordable, and you can get your supplies while shopping at Walmart!

What you’ll do:
  1. Pick out your Paper. I used about 6 different papers, but you can use any amount. This is all about personal style and preference.
  2. Put down a piece of cardboard on your work surface so you don’t mess anything up.
  3. Put your scrapbook paper with the printed side down, plain side up.
  4. Apple a thin layer of Mod Podge over the clothespin, making sure to the the edges good.
  5. Place clothespin, glue side down on the scrapbook paper. I placed mine to line up with the edges of the paper.
  6. Press down firmly, let it sit for a few seconds, and cut around the clothespin with the X-Acto knife.
  7. Flip over, smooth out paper, apply a thing layer of Mod Podge over the paper, and let try.
  8. Repeat until desired amount of clothespins are done.
  9. Once dried, add embellishments. You can either hot glue them on or if you’re using scrapbook ones, just apply them since they have a sticky side.
  10. Cut a 3 to 5 yard piece of ribbon. The length will depend on where you’re going to hang your garland, so measure and cut accordingly.
  11. Hang Ribbon, place clothespins on the ribbon, Attach Hallmark cards for all to enjoy!

*For added effect, you can paint the clothespins before decorating. You can also apply paper to both sides.

** If you aren’t in the mood for doing all the steps with the scrapbook paper, use some Christmas washi tape or decorative tape instead. No glue or mess.
