5 Ways to Clean with Baking Soda

ways to clean with baking soda

One of my favorite cleaning agents is baking soda. I always have some in the house for cleaning or baking, it’s cheap, and it does a great job at tackling messes. It works on a variety of surfaces and situations and you can use it in every room of the house.

Stain Remover – Mix baking soda with vinegar and original dawn to tackle stains. I’ve used this on carpets, mattresses, and clothing. Mix together 1/2 cup Dawn, 1 cup Hydrogen Peroxide, and 2 T Baking Soda. For clothing I pour the mixture on the stain, give it a little scrub with a toothbrush and let it sit to get the stain out. Then wash as normal. For carpets I pour the mixture over a stain and scrub with a washcloth or scrub brushed dipped in hot water.

Deodorize – Baking soda works great for getting out stinky smells. Sprinkle some in smelly shoes and let it sit over night. Our son spilled some milk on the carpet that I missed until it started to smell. I poured baking soda over the area, let it sit over night, and then vacuumed it up the next morning and the odor was gone. (Followed up by cleaning the area with the above mixture). You can also use it before vacuuming, just sprinkle some on the carpet and let it sit for 15 minutes before you vacuum.

Baked on foods – Ever have burnt or stubborn foods that you just can’t get off a baking dish? Sprinkle some baking soda over the area and then pour on some vinegar and watch it bubble. Let it sit for a few minutes and then wash with hot water, soap, and a good sponge.

Drain Cleaner – Pour 1 cup of baking soda in your drain followed by 1 cup of vinegar. Watch as the mixture bubbles and goes down the drain. Let it sit 5 minutes and then pour hot boiling water down the drain.

Soft Surface Scrub – Perfect for counters, tiles, and tubs. Sprinkle baking soda lightly on a clean damp sponge and scrub as usual. Rinse with hot water and dry.
