Slow Cooker Sausage Stuffing

Do you remember waking up on Thanksgiving morning as a kid? I sure do. Those memories are filled with my mom making her delicious stuffing and getting the turkey into the oven. As for me, I remember running to the TV and watching the Thanksgiving Day parade on TV. All those big floats and blow up characters were so memorizing to me. I miss those days and some years wish I could do it all over again, but now it’s my turn to be standing in front of the stove when my kids wake up. Waking up to the smell of stuffing and turkey cooking is so nostalgic to me.

When it comes to my mama’s stuffing it’s always stayed the same. Celery, Carrots, Onion, Stuffing Mix, and Jimmy Dean® Sausage. You knew Thanksgiving was close when the gold wrapped roll of sausage showed up in the fridge and I couldn’t wait. My mama’s stuffing is one of my favorite side dishes at Thanksgiving. Now that I’m the one in charge of cooking I reach for that roll of Jimmy Dean® refrigerated sausage too. I use Jimmy Dean® sausage all year long, especially for breakfast. Sausage gravy and biscuits is a family favorite and something else we enjoy on Thanksgiving morning.

When my mama passed along her recipe using Jimmy Dean® sausage she gave the gift of love and a full belly. Jimmy Dean® sausage is the key ingredient to so many delicious recipes and recipe hacks that can be enjoyed anytime of day during the busy holiday season. It’s perfect for all cooking needs and with premium ingredients you just can’t go wrong using it.

There are a few things I do differently when I make my mama’s stuffing. They’re minor tweaks, but I leave out the mushrooms because I can’t stand them and I cook mine in the slow cooker. Doing it in the slow cooker frees up space in the oven, I can set it and forget it, and I find that it comes out a lot more moist. The ingredients are simple, but when combined it’s so flavorful.

You’ll start by dicing up onion, garlic, celery, and carrots. I toss all of mine in the food processor and chop them into small bits. This saves time with chopping and no crying because of the onions. Add some butter to a pan and start to brown your roll of Jimmy Dean® sausage. Once it’s about 75% cooked I add the chopped up veggies, salt, pepper, and poultry seasoning. Cook until sausage is browned. Spray a slow cooker with cooking spray and add the sausage mixture. Add in 1 bag of stuffing mix. I use either corn bread stuffing or seasoned stuffing. Mix together and add 3-4 cups of chicken broth. Mix well again and set slow cooker to high. After 30 minutes turn slow cooker down to low and let it cook for about 4 hours.

What memories do you have from Thanksgiving? Any family favorite recipes?
