7 Tips for Battling Flu Season!

I usually make it out of cold & flu season without getting sick, but this year I got hit hard. Last month I was sick twice and both times were pretty nasty. Thankfully my kids didn’t catch the flu that I had, but it was really hard to get out of bed to take care of them for a few days. I was miserable, but found a few key ways to help me get through the nastiness that is the flu, like Kleenex tissues

There was lots of coughing and nose blowing going on when I was sick. For that I needed a good medicine and strong, but gentle tissue. When I’m sick Kleenex brand tissues are my go to and I always keep a few boxes stocked in our basement for when someone gets hit with a cold or the flu in our home. 

1. Stay Hydrated. When you’re sick you tend to forget to eat and drink because you feel so crappy, but it’s really important to keep your body nourished. Staying hydrated is most important and I keep a big stainless steel mug full of lemon water by my side at all times to drink. Lemon water also gives a boost of vitamin C, which is good for you when you’re sick. Some other great things to drink are warm tea with honey and lemon or soup broth.

2. Kleenex Tissue. Kleenex is my go to brand of tissue. They’re strong, but gentle. When you’re blowing your nose a lot your nose can start to get sore or irritated, but Kleenex Ultra Soft and Kleenex Soothing Lotion help to keep my nose from getting sore and irritated. Kleenex also kills 99.9% of cold and flu viruses in the tissue and Kleenex has moisture activated blue dot layer with special anti viral formula to kill cold and flu viruses. I pick up a variety of Kleenex tissues at our local Walmart and I love being able to pick out the pretty boxes that match into our decor.

3. Moisture. Colorado is really dry and when you’re sick it can be even worse. I run a humidifier to help with that dryness. Running a humidifier can even help to ward off illnesses, but when you’re sick it’s good for congestion, sore throats, and to help you to breathe easier. If you have one that allows for medicine, adding some menthol, like Vicks Vaposteam, can be helpful too. 

4. Hand washing. When our daughter was in kindergarten she was sick a good chunk of the year and was bringing that sickness home to her little brother and sister. We started making her take a shower and change her clothes as soon as she got home and noticed a big reduction in the germ spreading. Her teacher this year makes the kids wash their hands frequently and mentioned at a parent teacher conference that she noticed it helped a lot. Our kids do the same at school and since we’ve started making them shower when they get home and wash their hands more they don’t get sick much anymore. When sick it helps to reduce the spread of germs.

5. Vitamins. We take our daily vitamins with extra vitamin c. If someone gets sick we push extra vitamin C and load up on orange juice and Emergen-C. My Fruit Punch Vitamin C pops are favorite around here too. 

6. Medicine. I’m not someone who likes to take a lot of medicine, but on the really bad days I make sure to take medicine on a schedule to help with my symptoms. Day/Nyquil is my go to that helps relieve some of my flu symptoms. 

7. A Cute Doctor. Our daughter loves being a Doctor and is always trying to make us feel better when we’re sick. She brings the Kleenex tissues and gives lots of cuddles.
