DIY Lunchable

Can y’all believe that summer vacation is almost over and it’s time to start back to school shopping? One of my kids goes back in just 2 weeks and the other in about a month. Not only are we back to school supply and clothes shopping, but I am also stocking up on items for their lunches. With our little girl arriving in 2 weeks life is going to be pretty crazy in our house now that we’ll have 4 kids and 2 of them are going back to school. Thankfully Safeway is having a HUGE Anniversary sale right now and I can stock up on a lot of items I’ll need for the kids lunches and save money in the process. As a family of 6 I am all about saving money whenever and wherever I can.

During the Safeway Anniversary sale, and Albertsons banner stores such as Acme, Vons, and Shaws, I was able to stock up on some of my kids favorite lunch items like Lay’s potato chips, wheat thins crackers, Gatorade, and much more. There were big displays all over the store with the anniversary sale items and the items in the aisles had labels saying “anniversary sale”. I like to switch it up with their lunches and offer a variety of items and something other than sandwiches. We’ll do left overs in a thermos, pizza, and one of their favorites being a lunchable type box. I love doing the lunchable boxes because I can control what items are put into it and we can switch the items they like around.

What you’ll need:

  • A protein x 2: turkey. ham, tuna, or chicken are great options for meat and sliced cheese or string cheese are great for a cheese option.
  • A starch: Crackers, pretzels, and pita crackers are all good options.
  • A fruit or vegetable: I prefer to do a fresh fruit or veggie sliced up but the kids also love apple sauce pouches.
  • A treat: depending on the day the kids will get anything from some chips, a small piece of candy, or a cookie.
  • A drink: water, Gatorade, juice boxes, or shelf stable milk.
  • A bento box lunchbox or reusable lunch container and cupcake liners.

What you’ll do:

Assemble it all and pack it in their backpack! I like to go with the reusable lunch container and cupcake liners. We have a variety of cupcake liners stocked in our cabinets so each day is a new surprise on which colors, patterns, and characters they’ll get!

Also included in our lunchbox is a snack for morning time which is usually a Quaker granola bar (also part of the anniversary sale) and yogurt (I like to freeze them and put them in their lunchbox frozen so they don’t spoil).

One of the big items I stocked up on was Lay’s potato chips. Since they’re only $1.99 when you buy 4 or more they should last for many lunches and they’re one of the kids favorite treats in their lunchboxes. What’s your kids favorite flavor?

Safeway is my go to grocer. Shop the HUGE Anniversary sale and stock up on your favorite brands 7/29-8/11. I’d love to hear how your family will stock up!
